Maluganje Elephant Sanctuary

The Mwaluganje Elephant Reserve is located in Shimba Hills Forest and a community-owned elephant park, a conservation area for elephants and Encephalartos cycads in Kwale County, Kenya.

The sanctuary was formed in the early 1990s as a cooperative project between the people of the surrounding Mwaluganje community, United States Agency for International Development, and the Born Free Foundation and the Eden Wildlife Trust.

Maluganje Elephant Sanctuary is an example of ecotourism, as well as community-based-conservation efforts, both of which are very recent trends in conservation management. In this community-based program, the local people have leased their privately owned property to a community-based trust.

Shimba Hills National Reserve

This reserve is one of the largest coastal forests in East Africa (15 km from the coast) and area of coastal rainforest, woodland and grassland. It is an important area for plant biodiversity – over 50% of the 159 rare plants in Kenya are found in the Shimba Hills, including some endangered species of cycad and orchids. It is also a nationally important site for birds and butterflies.

There are estimated to be approximately 700 elephants in the reserve. This population is unsustainably high – it causes significant damage to vegetation, threatening the endangered plant life.

Shimba Hills contains Kenya’s only population of Sable Antelope. There are about 100 in the park.

Highlights:

  • guided forest safaris
  • guided hike to the Elephant Lookout
  • a cool bath at the 2ß meter high Sheldrick’s Fall waterfall
  • sable antelopes that are no longer found in Kenya
